The SchoolAir project is Brunel University’s study into air quality and its effect on the respiratory health of school children.  The pilot phase of this project will run over the 2009-10 school year

Prevalence of respiratory and allergic diseases in children in the UK has been increasing in the past two decades, and the issue is of great public health concern. Although it is not very clear what causes asthma or allergic diseases, there are a number of environmental factors such as particulate matter, gaseous pollutants, or allergens (pollen, dust mites) that may contribute to the disease triggering or exacerbation, and these are commonly found in indoor environments. Children in the UK spend about a third of their day indoors in schools, therefore we want to investigate the school environments to get a better understanding of children’s total exposure to allergens.

This project is a collaboration between the Institute for the Environment and the Experimental Techniques Centre, bringing together expertise on asthma, public health, epidemiology, micro analysis, particulates and air pollution.  Our team includes medical, biological and materials experts, to ensure a fully integrated project.
