for parents

What will happen in school?

This project will run from July 2009 to July 2010, covering the school year.  There will be an information visit from the research team towards the start of the autumn term.  Parents will be sent a questionnaire to complete in September 2009.  The research team will be conducting measurements in schools up to five times over the course of the year, for periods of one week each.  Parents may also be sent brief update questionnaires to coincide with these visits.  For each visit the measurements of air quality will be ongoing throughout the week.  Children in year three will be asked to take part in breath chemistry measurements no more than three times over the week.  This will be done on an individual basis away from the rest of the class, and a member of school staff will always be present when any of the research team is working with children.

Who will see the information I provide?

All information which is collected about you and your child during the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential to the research team and will not be disclosed to the school.  Reports and scientific publications may arise from this work.  All data used in reports will be in aggregate form identifying trends in the data, no child names or addresses will be reported or published.  It is expected that this data will help develop a larger scale project.  Except in the reported form, data will not be retained for longer than ten years from the end of the study.

What happens if I don’t want to take part?

As participation is entirely voluntary, it is up to you to decide whether or not to take part.  If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form.  If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason.  Your decision to take part or not take part will not affect your child’s grades or treatment at school.

Who do I contact if I have any questions?
